Designed for use with Fernox TF1 in-line system filters or other similar filters, this unique inhibitor package includes an active dispersant which is proven to aid the safe collection of corrosion, debris and scale via a filter. The Protector+ Filter Fluid enhances the performance of a system filter whilst offering full protection against corrosion and scale formation. This innovative, proven formulation also extends system life and maintains optimum efficiency, while still being an environmentally friendly formulation. Concentration levels should be checked as part of the annual maintenance system service.

  • The recommended Ôin useÕ concentration of Protector+ Filter Fluid is 0.385%. A single dose treats and protects a larger sized property with a heating system of 130 litres, up to 16 radiators or 250 sqm of underfloor heating. For open vented systems add via the feed and expansion tank. For sealed systems add via a suitable dosing point (e.g. a towel rail, or an in-line system filter). Alternatively, use a suitable dosing vessel to inject the product into the system. In single feed indirect cylinders, e.g. ‘Primatic’ or similar, potable water chemicals must be used. We recommend that untreated, or sludged systems are thoroughly cleaned and flushed in accordance with BS 7593:2019 and Benchmark using Fernox Cleaner F3/F8, before treating with Fernox Protector+ Filter Fluid, as existing debris can damage the installation. Fernox Protector+ Filter Fluid must be used with the Fernox TF1 Filter range, or other in-line system filters. Use in microbore systems is not recommended. Fernox Protector+ Filter Fluid is an enhanced corrosion inhibitor, combining corrosion inhibition with dispersant properties. It is specifically formulated to prevent settling and aggregation of corrosion deposits and contaminants within central heating systems, to deliver the debris directly to an in-line filter (such as one from the Fernox TF1 Filter range) for fast removal and containment. This function allows systems to run more efficiently by minimising the settling of debris in low flow areas such as radiators, which causes cold spots, and facilitates further corrosion underneath the debris. Protector+ Filter Fluid gives long-term protection of domestic central heating systems against internal corrosion and limescale formation. It is suitable for all types of boiler, radiators and pipework systems. Protector+ Filter Fluid is compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems. It is suitable for use with all types of water, including softened water and deionised water. Protector+ Filter Fluid has been formulated to have best-in-class pH buffering ability, which keeps system water pH between 6.5-8.5, providing optimum protection for mixed-metal systems. To comply with BS 7593:2019, Protector+ Filter Fluid levels should be checked annually. The concentration of the product can be easily measured on-site using a Fernox Protector Test Kit, or by using the Fernox Water Quality Test postal service. BS 7593:2019 also states that after five years, systems should either be re-dosed, or a laboratory test performed, such as the Fernox Water Quality Test.

    Fernox Protector+ Filter Fluid is classified as non-hazardous for human health, but as with all chemicals, keep out of reach of children. In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water.

    Minerals in chalk or limestone rock collect as water permeates through the ground and collects in aquifers. These minerals remain within the water and are carried into the domestic water supply.

    What causes limescale deposition?
    They inevitably reach central heating and water systems, where they build-up over time to cause blockages in pipework, efficiency losses and the premature failure of components. These problems can arise in both the primary water system (the central heating system) and secondary (household hot water) system.

    The mineral deposits, collectively known as limescale, consist primarily of calcium and magnesium carbonates which are generally insoluble. Limescale occurs when these deposits are formed as a result of heating water that contains soluble bicarbonate salts (which are thermally unstable and break down to form carbonates).

    There are several factors that contribute to the build-up of limescale, including:

    • High (temporary) hardness
    • Elevated pH (alkalinity) of the water
    • Elevated temperature

    What should be done?
    Prevention is always better than cure. In central heating systems, the addition of any Fernox Protector F1 will prevent deposition of limescale.

    For domestic hot water systems, Fernox offers a range of scale reducers designed to provide either whole house or single appliance protection.

    For whole house protection, the Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer should be installed on to the mains water supply to the property. To protect single appliances such as the boiler, the Fernox Magnetic Scale Reducer is ideal.

    If the central heating system is already contaminated with limescale it should be cleaned using an acid-based cleaner such as Fernox DS40 Descaler & Cleaner. However, descaling alone will not restore the central heating system to its original condition. After descaling it is imperative to protect the system against further scaling by adding any Fernox Protector F1 or if a system filter is fitted Fernox Protector + Filter Fluid

    If limescale formation has occurred within the hot water system, individual appliances such as kettles, showerheads and heat exchangers can be descaled using Fernox DS-3 Limescale Remover. For open vented systems Fernox Superconcentrate Limescale Preventer is an ideal way to keep system water scale-free.

    Boiler noise results from localised boiling of the water. This happens when the inside surface of the boiler becomes too hot due to scale or baked- on sludge deposits.

    All systems over five years can suffer noise and new boilers in old systems are especially vulnerable. Add Fernox Boiler Noise Silencer F2 and / or de-scale the boiler with Fernox DS40 System Cleaner and protect with Fernox Protector F1 or Protector + Filter Fluid.

    One bottle of Fernox Protector F1 or Protector + Filter Fluid will treat a typical system of ten single panel radiators – double panel radiators, count as two radiators.

    If the calculated dose rate is in between pack sizes, dose to the higher figure.

    No, overdosing is not detrimental to the system. It is important to ensure that sufficient Protector is present in the system.

    There is a test kit and a postal testing service to check the Protector concentration. Refer to Protector Test Kit product data sheet for further guidance.

    Normally a treatment will last the life of the system but an annual check to determine whether further dosing is necessary is recommended.

    If the system is drained, it will need to be re-treated with a further full dose of Protector. You can check if the system is properly dosed using a Fernox Protector Test Kit.

    Fernox Cleaner  F3 should ideally circulate around the system for at least one hour, or up to a week, after which it should be drained out and the system flushed/ cleaned before adding Fernox Protector F1 or Protector + Filter Fluid together with a Fernox TF1 Filter to protect the system from further corrosion and scale formation.

    Fernox Protectors are suitable for use on systems of all ages. However, it would be  advantageous to clean and flush the system with Fernox Cleaner F3 to remove  sludge before adding the Protector F1.

    Alternatively, the universal Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector can deliver sludge and debris to an existing in-line filter or a newly installed TF1 Filter, whilst protecting the system against further corrosion formation.

    It should be left permanently in the system with Protector F1 or Protector + Filter Fluid and replaced or topped up at the same time.

    Protector + Filter Fluid should only be used in combination with an in-line system filter, which can trap and contain the debris in the system before safe removal.

    It is ideal for use in circumstances where a system has previously been cleaned or flushed but subsequently has not been adequately protected so further corrosion has taken place. It is also suitable for systems with poor design or low flow rates which make conventional cleaning difficult. Protector + Filter Fluid enables ongoing purging and collection of system debris. Treatment levels should be checked annually as part of a maintenance and service programme to ensure full protection.
