The Fernox Antifreeze Valve SV is specifically designed to protect water-based air source Heat Pump heating systems. In cold weather when temperatures drop, systems that are not treated with a glycol-based fluid can freeze within the heat pump circuit potentially causing harmful and costly damage to vulnerable heat pump components and system pipework; eventually causing premature breakdown and repair.
The Fernox Antifreeze Valve SV is an essential, simple to install component developed to prevent frozen systems by detecting when the fluid in the circuit is close to freezing point i.e., when the circuit temperature reaches below 3° C. The Antifreeze Valve SV will automatically open and release system water, preventing ice from forming within the Heat Pump system and safeguarding the operation of the system.
The primary function of the Antifreeze Valve SV is to detect when the fluid in the system is close to freezing. When the temperature in the heat pump system drops below a certain point, the valve opens and releases a small amount of fluid.
The Antifreeze Valve SV is an essential component of the heat pump system, to protect the system from damage caused by freezing. If the fluid in the system freezes, it could lead to costly repairs and unscheduled downtime, leaving the building without heat.
The Antifreeze Valve SV allows the system fluid to be drained when its temperature reaches an average value of 3° C. This prevents ice forming in the heating and cooling system to prevent potential damage to the Heat Pump and pipework.
The Antifreeze Valve SV must be installed in a horizontal position, with the outlet facing downwards, to allow the system fluid to flow out properly, free from any obstructions allowing the system to be quickly and efficiently drained. The Antifreeze Valve SV must be installed outdoors, where the lowest temperatures can be reached, and it must be positioned away from sources of heat that could impact the functionality of the antifreeze valve.
The Fernox Antifreeze Valve SV is a versatile, high-performance frost protection solution that can be easily installed directly onto the back of a heat pump positioned close to a wall. This design saves time and minimizes the number of components required for installation.
It is recommended to install the Antifreeze Valve SV on both flow and return pipes. It is best practice to insulate the Antifreeze Valve SV using the appropriately sized thermal cover supplied by Fernox.

Preparation for installation
Ensure that the pipes are clean. Do not allow debris, tape, or any other solid element to settle in the system.
Installation
Fernox Antifreeze Valves must only be installed in a horizontal position, with the outlet facing downwards, to allow the drained water to flow out properly and free from obstructions.
Fernox Antifreeze Valves must be installed externally, in the coldest part of the system, where there is a risk of frost. It is recommended to install a Fernox Antifreeze Valve on both pipes (flow and return Fig. 3). They must also be positioned away from heat sources that could affect correct operation.
Keep a distance of at least 10 cm from the ground (Fig. 1). Maintain a distance of at least 10 cm between the antifreeze valves so that, in the event of a discharge, the valve positioned above does not discharge onto the valve below (Fig. 2).
In-line with regulations, the discharge from the antifreeze valve must be routed into an appropriate collection tray or pipe.
It is advisable to keep the system under pressure at all times, even when draining a Fernox Antifreeze Valve.
In very hard water areas there must be provision for adequate filtration and water treatment of the water before it enters the system, according to technical standards.
Do not make any trap connections.
If the shape of the connection pipe has the potential to create a trap effect (as shown in Fig. 4), drainage is prevented and frost protection will no longer be guaranteed.
Do not use heat above 65°c.
Insulation
Insulation ensures the system is working at optimum efficiency. When using insulation only place it around the body. DO NOT COVER the vacuum breaker. When the valve is installed externally it must be protected from rain, snow and direct sunlight.
