The Fernox CF1 Magnetic Dirt Separator is a high-efficiency magnetic filtration unit designed for closed-loop commercial heating and cooling systems. It removes both magnetic and non-magnetic particles from circulating fluid, helping protect boilers, pumps, heat exchangers and other critical system components.
Its low pressure drop design supports stable system flow and energy-efficient operation, while tool-free maintenance enables fast and easy removal of collected debris without requiring system shutdown.
Suitable for systems containing up to 50% glycol, the range is available in two versions, from DN50 to DN150:
• Standard Flow – suitable for velocities up to 1.5 m/s
• High Flow – suitable for velocities up to 3.0 m/s
High-efficiency separation – The CF1 uses hydrocyclonic separation to remove non-magnetic particles from circulating system fluid, while its high-strength neodymium magnet captures ferrous debris. The magnet is housed in a dry pocket, allowing ferrous particles to be captured efficiently without the magnet coming into contact with the system fluid.
Optimised flow design – The CF1 features an optimised internal flow path designed to provide effective particle separation while maintaining a low pressure drop through the unit. This supports efficient system flow without unnecessarily restricting circulation.
Robust construction – Constructed from carbon steel with a corrosion-resistant internal coating, the CF1 is designed for long-term use in commercial heating and cooling systems. Its vertical body and flanged connections are designed to support straightforward installation and access for servicing.
Easy maintenance – The drain valve allows collected debris to be removed quickly and easily without isolating or shutting down the system, helping minimise maintenance time and disruption.
The CF1 Magnetic Dirt Separator is designed to improve system efficiency in sealed commercial heating and chilled water systems, including applications in schools, hospitals, offices and other commercial buildings. Installed in-line on the flow or return pipework, the CF1 uses hydrocyclonic separation and magnetic capture to remove non-magnetic and ferrous debris, helping protect key components including pumps, boilers and heat exchangers.
The CF1 is suitable for systems using chemical inhibitors such as Fernox Protector F9.
Location (Heating systems): On the flow line, preferably after the boiler
Location (Cooling systems): On the return line, close to the chiller
The system operates independently of flow direction, while the drain valve allows collected debris to be discharged without requiring a system shutdown.
Maximum Operating Pressure: 10 bar
Test Pressure: >15 bar
Operating Temperature Range: 0 – 110°C
Installation Orientation: Horizontal pipework
Connection Type: Flanged
Suitable Fluids:
• Water
• Glycol-water mixtures (up to 50%)
Operating Principle
As the system fluid enters the CF1, the internal geometry slows down the flow to create a separation zone.
Ferrous particles are captured by the dry-pocket housed neodymium magnet, while heavier non-magnetic particles settle to the bottom of the chamber.
Collected contaminants are removed through the integrated drain valve during maintenance, without requiring system shutdown.
The design enables effective removal of circulating debris while maintaining system operation.
• Body Material: Carbon steel
• Internal Coating: Corrosion-resistant
• Magnet: Neodymium, housed in dry pocket
• Drain Valve: Brass
• Connections: Flanged (DN50–DN150), EN 1092-1 / PN16
• Installation Orientation: Horizontal pipework
Each unit is hydrostatically tested at >15 bar before dispatch. The product is supplied with pre-installed magnet assembly, drain valves, and a user guide. The unit is not suitable for outdoor use. Regular draining is recommended based on system contamination levels, typically every 6 months. Installation and maintenance must be carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with relevant safety procedures.
